Above are the images by NOAA captured on 20 September 1998. The left is an image by Channel 2 of AVHRR sensor. A vortex seen in the lower part of the image is Typhoon No. 7. The Typhoon No.7 struck the Kii Peninsula two days after. In succession several days later, the Typhoon No. 8 directly struck the Kinki region, which caused a big damage by strong wind and rain. In Muroo Temple, which has been standing since the Heian Period, five storied pagoda was destroyed by a tree fell down by a strong wind. Like the above image, state of clouds can be understood using Channel 2.
On the other hand, the right is an image by Channel 5 of AVHRR. The Channel 5 observes the wavelength of far infrared that correlates with temperature. The more the red deepens, the higher the temperature increases. It is understood that cloud forming the typhoon contains warm and humid air of the tropics.
