In order to cope with global environmental problems, reliable geospatial information of the whole globe is indispensable. Global Mapping project was advocated by The Ministry of Construction of Japan (current The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan) aiming to develop digital geospatial datasets (Global Map) of the whole globe. The purpose of the Global Map is to accurately describe the present status of the global environment. Global Map is developed by respective National Mapping Organizations (NMOs) of the world.
International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM) conducts a policy making and a progress management.
The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) has contributed to the project not only as a participating organization, but also by serving as the Secretariat of ISCGM since its establishment in 1996. In addition, GSI has provided technical assistance to other NMOs of developing countries for the development of the Global Map through the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) training course hosted by GSI and other means.
Global Map Japan was developed by Geospatial Information Authority of Japan(GSI).
