What is a Global Map?

In order to cope with global environmental problems, reliable geographic information of the whole globe is indispensable. Global Mapping project was advocated by Ministry of Construction of Japan (current Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan) aiming to develop digital geographic data sets (Global Map) of the whole globe. The purpose of the Global Map is to accurately describe the present status of the global environment in international cooperation of respective National Mapping Organizations (NMOs) of the world.

International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM) has been playing a central role in the development of the Global Map data sets. The Global Map data sets produced by converting existing geographic information into Global Map Specifications (Global Map version 0) and country- specific data sets for 71 countries and 4 region (Algeria, America, Argentina, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belize, Bhutan, Botswana, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Congo, Dem.Rep.of Congo, Cuba, Dominica, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea-Bissau, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan,  Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyz, Laos, Latvia, Lebanon, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Niger, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Panama, Philippines, Romania, Samoa, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Swaziland, Thailand, Tunisia, Uruguay, VietNam, Antarctica, Hong Kong SAR, The Palestinian Teritories and Tristan da Cunha) developed by respective NMOs are currently distributed to the public through Internet.

The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) is actively involved in the ISCGM activities and provides technical assistance among others for the development of the Global Map. ISCGM Secretariat is placed at GSI and functions as a center of the Global Mapping project.
